Thanks to the previous owners of our house we have a beautiful, little pie cherry tree in our backyard.
The other day I noticed they were ripe and wanted to pick one to try, but when I stepped outside onto our deck I saw that this deer had the same idea as me and was already munching on the leaves, thankfully leaving the cherries alone.
This afternoon I decided to pick all the cherries off the tree and bake a pie. The recipe I used called for 4 cups of cherries. I was just shy of that, so I added about 10 regular cherries to the mix.
I've never baked a pie before and really wanted to make my own crust. But since I don't yet have a proper rolling pin (excuses, excuses) I used a couple of Tenderflake frozen shells instead.
I'm just thrilled with how this turned out and have already eaten 2 big pieces with generous helpings of Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. I can't wait till next year; hopefully the tree will yield enough for 2 pies then...
Note: These pictures were taken with my new camera - a Nikon D40!
